About HobbyistScope

Independent oscilloscope reviews for the hobbyist community.

Our Mission

HobbyistScope exists as the independent guide for hobbyists, makers, students, and self-taught engineers who need honest specs and real benchmark data — not marketing copy. Choosing your first (or second) oscilloscope is a meaningful purchase. We do the verification work so you can buy with confidence, whether you're debugging an Arduino project or reverse-engineering a protocol at the bench.

Our Testing Methodology

Every oscilloscope on this site goes through a structured evaluation process across three dimensions before it earns a recommendation.

Spec Verification

Every specification is cross-referenced against manufacturer datasheets and FCC filings. We flag discrepancies between advertised and measured figures so you know exactly what you're buying.

Bench Testing

Scopes are evaluated on an actual bench with real signal generators and probe test kits. We measure bandwidth roll-off, noise floor, trigger jitter, and UI response time under working conditions.

Value Assessment

We don't just look at raw specs. We assess the full package: software quality, community support, documentation depth, and long-term firmware update history. A well-supported $200 scope often beats a neglected $400 one.

Our Scoring System

Each oscilloscope is rated on a 10-point scale across four weighted dimensions.

40%

Performance

Bandwidth accuracy, noise floor, trigger performance, and waveform capture fidelity. The core job of the instrument.

25%

Value

Price-to-performance relative to direct alternatives at similar price points. A $180 scope that punches above its weight scores well here.

20%

Build Quality

Chassis construction, display quality, included probe quality, and expected longevity under regular hobbyist use.

15%

Software

UI intuitiveness, PC connectivity software, firmware update history, and manufacturer responsiveness to community bug reports.

Affiliate Disclosure

We earn a small commission through Amazon affiliate links — typically 1–4% depending on the product category. This commission never influences our editorial decisions. Our picks are based solely on testing results and honest assessment. If a scope doesn't make the cut, it doesn't get recommended, regardless of potential commission.

About the Site

HobbyistScope was built by an electronics hobbyist tired of review sites that repeat manufacturer specs without verification. Too many “best oscilloscope” lists are recycled affiliate content with no real evaluation behind them. Every recommendation on this site represents genuine research and, where possible, hands-on bench time.
